This was painted for the Abilympics art show at the Argyle Gallery in Halifax to the theme of Flowers and Passion. For a lot of reasons, this painting is one of my personal favorites.
The back-story : My parents garden in the Summer time, one of them has allergies to pollen but loves gardening despite the fact that it comes paired with coughing ,red runny eyes and a puffer. With this in mind I decided to do a slightly abstracted painting of what a garden must look like through the eyes of a person with allergies. It was a weird idea to run with. I’ll admit that.
The Process : I actually built the canvas frame, which is something I don’t do often. After that I cut a piece of canvas material from the roll and covered it in layers and layers of acrylic paint. Let it dry. Washed it out. Let it dry. Ironed the canvas material and then stretched it over the canvas frame. (Long story short, I dyed the canvas material to create a background of blurred colors.)
After that oil paints were applied and a painting was born.

The painting is great! As is the ad for visine that Google placed right below it
Can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer will bring to your work Alexis – Korea is only 75 days away!
Ah! hahah.
I am very, very excited. Before the end of July hopefully 3-4 more paintings of flowers will be posted on this blog and that will make 8 practice paintings. With Jason’s help I’m going to pick the most successful one and then spend August re-painting it over and over while timing myself to make sure I can complete it in 4
